Our EMDR Therapy Approach to Trauma Recovery
Here at Compass Counseling Center, we use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR, for short) to help our clients heal from traumatic past experiences. Your therapist will explain EMDR in much more detail during your free consultation, but until then, here’s a bit about the process:
Creating safety first. Before anything else, your therapist helps you build trust and grounding tools.
Identifying the memories that feel heavy. Together, you’ll choose a starting memory.
Reprocessing through gentle eye movements. As you focus on that memory, your therapist will guide you through specific eye movements (bilateral stimulation) to help your brain begin to reprocess what happened.
Installing new inner-truths. As the distress tied to that memory lessens, your therapist will help you strengthen a new, positive belief about yourself (e.g., I’m safe now). Through continued bilateral stimulation, this new truth begins to take root.
Checking in with your body. Your therapist will guide you through a body scan to notice any remaining sensations or tension linked to the memory. If anything feels unsettled, you’ll work through it together until you feel at ease.
Strengthening the calm. Before closing each session, your therapist will help you reconnect with a sense of steady ground from which to launch back into the world.
